Four Seasons wins £6300 funding

We are delighted that on the 18th November at Torrisholme Methodist Church, we were one of six organisations to be awarded community funding through the Closing Loops project for our allotment to become more accessible and build community plots. Eleven organisations had 3 minutes to pitch their idea to the community and our Chair, Vic and Treasurer, Kate took to the stage to pitch our plans:
Currently, our site, though unusually flat for an allotment, faces drainage issues, making it challenging for everyone, especially those with limited mobility.
Challenges: Despite the flat terrain, poor drainage turns our site into a swamp with every rainfall, hindering accessibility even in the summer months. We have members with mobility issues who need accessible plots.
Current State: Our existing infrastructure is basic but promising.
Proposed Improvements:
Drainage Enhancement: We aim to install French drains, transforming the site with gravel paths, making it accessible and less boggy throughout the year.
Accessible Parking: An on-site car park will not only aid wheelchair users but also ensure safety for those working alone on the allotments.
Storage Upgrade: Our current container needs attention. We plan to relocate, refurbish, and use it to securely store tools for everyone’s benefit.
Community Plots: The top of our site holds untapped potential. We envision creating community plots, collaborating with local schools and community projects. With upcycled concrete fence posts, we plan to build around 20 beds, complete with compost and growing packs.
Future Vision: Our ambitions extend beyond the basics. In the future, we aspire to a :
Natural Pond and Orchard: Develop a natural pond area at the site’s bottom with an orchard, creating a sustainable drainage solution.
Eco-Friendly Features: Incorporate eco-friendly elements like a composting toilet, polycrubs for year-round gardening, solar panels on the container, and a large summerhouse for community events surrounded by gardens.
